Not Sure When to See a Therapist? Read This.

The past year and a half has been like no other. The events that unfolded and the world that surrounds us have been unlike anything any of us have experienced before. With everything that is going on around us – and the constant threat and impact of COVID-19 on our lives – stress and anxiety levels are at an all time high. Given the circumstances, this is to be expected and there is no point denying it. Many of us are dealing with this and wondering if and when it’s time to see a therapist to talk about what we’re experiencing and work through the challenges we’re facing.

If you’re one of us wondering if and when to see a therapist, consider this: Trust you’re own gut. If you want to talk to someone, it’s time. Too often, we don’t even consider seeing a professional, because we don’t consider our situation to be serious enough for intervention, or we tell ourselves we simply need to pull ourselves toward ourselves.

The truth is, however, that we can see a therapist when we want, and for whatever reason we want. There is no need to wait for a crisis to cross your path. Therapy sessions are a great way to manage and maintain your daily mental health.

That said, there are times when the signs point to the fact that the time to wonder when to see a therapist has passed. While not nearly all the reasons, here are some common signs and situations that indicate you could benefit from talking to someone:

  • Your situation is affecting your life to the point that the quality of your life is decreasing.
  • You feel embarrassed about something to the point that you’re avoiding other people.
  • You’ve made changes to your life simply to avoid the issue.
  • You have developed habits to help you cope with the situation.
  • It’s affecting or hindering your relationships with other people.
  • It’s affecting your performance at work or school.
  • You are having trouble (or want help) achieving your goals.

So many of us are wondering when the right time is to take the leap and talk to someone. To answer the question, “when to see a therapist?” – trust your own instinct.
